BOOKS – Reading |
GOD believes reading is being replaced by video games, movies, and television. GOD loves a good book. Nothing is better than lying on the couch in front of a roaring fire and reading a book GOD can sink GOD’s teeth into. With that said, GOD has four books that appeared on the New York Times Sunday book review section lists that sparked GOD’s interest. The first, Madeleine Albright’s new book, “Memo To The President Elect”, is must reading. Ms. Albright, a favorite of GOD, scores again with an excellent piece of reading focusing on restoring America’s credibility. The second book GOD read recently was “Playing For Pizza“, by John Grisham. Just plain fun and an easy read. The next book that caught GOD’s eye was “The Secret”. The concept being how to get everything you want by just thinking it. The author, Rhonda Byrne, has stepped slightly over into GOD’s territory with this book – watch it Ms. Byrne. The final selection, “ I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell” by Tucker Max, is anything but fun reading. Max tells his story of being a self-absorbed drunken womanizer. GOD suggests this is a read if you’re depressed and thinking about drinking away your sorrows. Overall, GOD is shouting out loud that reading is vastly underrated. Why not try it this weekend – you might like it? Finally this thought by GOD: Read a book – save a mind. |

MOVIE – There Will Be Blood |
GOD believes Daniel Day-Lewis to be one of the universes great actors, and his portrayal of evil is astute and beguiling. Paul Dano, as a religious fanatic, also takes ownership of his character. The film, “There Will Be Blood” based on Sinclair Lewis’ “Oil!”, had the opportunity to be a great film, but it was not. Director and screenwriter, Paul Thomas Anderson, tells a story on the screen rich in visual effect, but falls slightly short on the story itself. While the first two hours moves along at a steady, if not slightly slow, pace the last thirty minutes finishes the compelling tale using cliff notes. GOD would have preferred the less is more theory when it came to the script. GOD will give Lewis the Oscar for best actor, but has other planes for Best Picture. GOD can only hope the next time Mr. Anderson takes on such a big piece of material he remembers that the story is the most important element of any film. With all that said GOD says go see “There Will Be Blood.” It is a very good film - But, not a great one. |
